Action cam

Look what I got for Christmas this year. A nice little video camera, also called an action cam. Brand name: Sony. Type: HDR-AS30V. This action cam is comparable to the famous GoPro branded camera’s. It can shoot up to 1080 in 60FPS. It also has 2 slo-mo settings, with the slowest setting at a ¼ speed (or 120FPS). The slo-mo is only possible at 720. This little camera has GPS built-in and also Wi-Fi. Using the Wi-Fi it can communicate directly with the iPhone, which is nice, but has little added value for now. Editing of the movies can be done using any movie editing software. The only downside to that is that you won’t be able to overlay the GPS info. This can only be handled by Sony’s proprietary software, called PlayMemories Home. This sucks, because it is Windows only. Having an Apple computer doesn’t really help. Sony just recently released an OSX ported version, but it doesn’t have the overlay yet. If you want to use the GPS overlay you’re stuck to WindBlows Windows. Me personally, I don’t mind yet. But that’s only because right now I’m not riding my motorbike, and the action cam use is limited to the mountain biking activity. And for this activity, speed is not so important. But image stabilization IS! And that’s what this beauty does the best compared to the other action cams out there. The only downside to image stabilization is the camera angle. With stabilize ON, you only get 120o angle, with stabilize OFF it’s all the way up to 170o angle. Not a big problem, it’s just something to keep in mind.

The action cam comes with a waterproof housing and lots of mounting materials. The only mounting option missing is the bike (steering) mount. That’s something I’ll have to purchase after-market. What’s also not include is a suction cup mount (for in-car use). For me no problem, since I won’t be using it in my car. A car is just for getting you from one point to the other ... or a means of transportation, not a hobby.
